CONSERVATORY CROWNED IN LONDON
December 2, 2013
We are absolutely delighted to announce that Blainey North has won the Society of British and International Design, International Design Excellence Award 2013 for Conservatory. The award was accepted by Blainey North at a ceremony held at The Dorchester hotel in London on Friday 29 November.
We are very grateful to the SBID and to the esteemed judging panel for selecting Conservatory amongst the worlds best and we thank everyone that took the time to vote for the project.
As designers, it’s always really satisfying to have your work recognised by both your peers and the public, but it is especially satisfying to win it for the Conservatory restaurant – which is extremely successful commercially – because it shows that design can be beautiful and exciting while still being functional. To be acknowledged by the Society of British and International Design is both thrilling and humbling.

BEST OF THE BEST

We are so very excited here at Blainey North that “our baby” the Crown Metropol Perthwas awarded the ‘Best Australian Hotel Renovation’ at the 2013 International Hotel Awards for Asia Pacific last week.
Blainey North was responsible for the Interior Architecture and design of this vast hotel refurbishment. We’ve spent many years re-designing this beautiful hotel from the lobby and reception, lobby bar and Atrium restaurant, through to the guest rooms, suites, presidential suites and club lounge.

TAILORED TO SUIT
February 18, 2013
The Level 9 Club Lounge at Crown Metropol Perth required functional sophistication and high drama… we were very happy to oblige. Our concept was to treat the space as a single garment in the form of a bespoke, tailored suit.
It all starts at reception with the ‘generator’ concept… reminiscent of a thread or seam, conceived as the anchoring device; these threads wrap the interior in the form of parasitic black beams, connecting and defining each of the interior spaces.
The colour pallete of rich blues, soft greys and warm whites is punctuated with polished champagne gold and gloss timber veneers and custom designed furniture by Blainey North.
And with every considered garment – the lining… the Club Lounge bathroom vanities were treated with an opulent gold metal mosaic.

‘Infinity’ Presidential Suite – Crown Metropol Perth
Our latest project was inspired by the arresting, ever changing sunsets of Western Australia and the vast horizontal views from the space. The overall interior was seen as a form of moving landscape, drawing from the intense colours of the sunset which reflect throughout the suite in the dramatic mirrored ceilings, creating a constantly shifting reflection, as well as providing the space with a sense of height.
The Level 9, Infinity Suite investigates aspects such as the never ending lineal element that is the horizon and the movements involved in a constantly shifting landscape. The numerous layers of horizontal detailing represent the horizon whilst continuous vertical elements represent the gradual movement through the horizontal planes. Changes in gradient within the suede, leather and linen wall panels give the guest a sense of travelling through the space whilst the accents in colour create a different destination experience.
The overall feel of the space is rich and calming. This can be seen through the neutral palette in the floor finishes, walls and furnishings, complemented by pops of vibrant reds, magentas and oranges which resemble the colours found at dusk. Gold detailing in the joinery, bespoke furniture and lighting throughout the scheme add an additional layer of sophistication to the palette.
All pieces of furniture and lighting in the suite were custom designed for the project by Blainey North. The design of each piece was meticulously crafted to complement the interior. In particular the curved timber back to the lounges to visually align with the timber veneer of the wall paneling.
The interior consists of stone flooring with custom designed plush wool rugs and carpet, lacquered timber veneers, polished metal ceilings and details and a Portoro Gold stone to the custom curved bar top. Fabrics used for the bespoke furniture throughout were procured from European fabric houses including Sonia Rykiel and Armani Casa.
The master bathroom features a set of double vanities and steam room in marble with leather inlay mirrors. On the ceiling, an inset pendant and inlay carpet in the stone flooring to mirror the design.
Custom designed lighting features throughout the Infinity Suite.
LE CONSERVATOIRE DU GRAND
July 9, 2012
Our latest project just finished, transports you to old London, Shanghai or New York during an era when craftsmanship and materials were revered and buildings and interiors were designed to endure and built to last. ‘Conservatory’ is reminiscent of English conservatories and references Georgian grandeur and Art Deco detailing. By adopting century-old techniques set in a modern context, it’s a true mix of French-Deco industria and old world decadence.
It is also the first time we have experimented with distilling the concept of a space to a simple line drawing, then translating this graphic form into a repetitive architectural detail. The inter-secting arch motif features on everything from the chandeliers to the chairs, tables and wall detailing. We think it’s the start of a whole new way of designing.

Congratulations to both Crown Towers and Crown Promenade who have been gifted with prestigious Hotel awards this month. A big thank you to our friends at Gourmet Traveller and to Tourism Accommodation Australia on the glowing report card.
CROWN TOWERS – Gourmet Traveller 2012 Travel Awards – Best Large Luxury Hotel
“It’s not easy staying on top in the luxury hotel stakes but Crown Towers, Melbourne’s riverside regent, is back in the winner’s circle in 2012. The hotel’s return to premier form might have something to do with the refurbishment of its villas last year, creating some of the country’s most decadent accommodation.”
“Crown Promenade Hotel has been named Superior Accommodation Hotel of the Year at the Tourism Accommodation Australia (Victoria) 2012 State Awards for Excellence.
Recently, Crown Promenade Hotel unveiled a stunning new lobby designed by Sydney-based Blainey North & Associates. The end result is a striking blend of modern and contemporary styling with bold red accents balanced with oversized, luxurious seating that is at once inviting, warm and welcoming.”
A CRYSTAL IN THE CROWN
June 6, 2012
Luxury and sharp originality converge in our latest design of this arresting and sophisticated space… A refurbishment of Crown Casino’s Club Lounge the ‘Crystal Club’. We drew our inspiration, quite literally from the lounge’s name, and gave it a sharp twist.
Dramatic shards of crystalline glass and mirror coalesce with the serenity of the soft suede wall paneling and subdued wall finishes to create a surprisingly peaceful feel. The ‘crystal’ form dominates every part of this design. From the angled patterned timber paneling, bespoke furniture and carpet designs through to the chandeliers and wall features, the crystalline angles are iterated throughout each element in this design. The plethora of mirror forms in the Reception insinuate the reflections and refractions yielded by a crystal and create an arrival of impact. As the guest continues through to the main club environment, these Reception elements seamlessly continue and adapt to the more subdued aesthetics of the lounge, dining and external terrace.
